FAQs

How does European sizing work?
Many popular brands have Euro sizing. Euro sizing is based on “Paris Points” which is 2/3 of a centimeter (approximately a quarter of an inch). If you currently wear Birkenstock, Naot, Finn Comfort, Dansko, or Ecco, you’ll typically wear the same size in California Footwear Company. Our feather light beach sandals run about a half size smaller.

Below is a conversion chart for your convenience. If you are between sizes it is generally best to order the larger size.

What is the width of your sandals?
California Footwear Company offers a Euro-sized width which is more generously proportioned than a US shoe width and typically fits a B-C width.

How long does it take to break in the cork footbed?
California Footwear Company’s footbed has an added layer of soft natural latex that provides instant comfort for your feet. So, while the cork footbed will conform to your foot’s shape over time for a customized fit, there is no harsh break in period.

Are your products environmentally friendly?
Yes! Our cork products feature many renewable components. The core of our footbed is cork and latex. Cork comes from the bark of the cork oak tree and can be harvested every 6 years or so. And latex is a natural form of rubber that comes from a tree. (Some latex is man-made, but we use only natural latex). Our jute layers help wick moisture from your foot and help protect the cork layer – jute is made from cotton. The glue used in the construction of our cork line of sandals is water-based, which is better for the health of our assembly team and better for the environment.

Can your footwear be resoled?
California Footwear Co. sandals are a great value. Our cork products can be resoled, and buckles replaced (although you probably would never need to) by many qualified repair shops. Since you have already broken them in perfectly to your feet, it saves money and makes perfect sense to prolong the life of your favorite pair of shoes – not to mention that it is one less pair in the landfill.

How do I care for my California Footwear?
In order to lengthen the life of your California Footwear we recommend you follow these simple steps:

  • Wipe off dust as it will settle in the creases of shoes and can act like sandpaper to cause mayhem on the leather’s finish.
  • Many spots and marks on leather can be cleaned off with a pencil eraser, especially on white leather.
  • Hairspray helps remove ink and pen marks – just blot with a paper towel.
  • Spots can be removed with a solution of ½ white vinegar and ½ water, which is particularly effective on sugar or alcohol spots.
  • Oil and grease can be cleaned with a spray-on spot remover.
  • As needed, apply a cream polish that matches the color of the leather to ward off soil penetration and condition the leather
  • If shoes get wet, let them dry naturally out of direct heat or sunshine. Stuff with paper towels to absorb moisture and retain the shape of the shoes.
  • For nubuck or suede, apply a liquid conditioner and silicone-based waterproofing spray to protect from staining. Use a suede brush to remove surface dust/dirt.
  • Footbeds can be taken out for airing. Use a mild detergent on liner and air dry away from direct heat or sunshine.
  • For our Featherweight/EVA collection, simply wipe with a wet cloth.
